Continue ShoppingGreen papaya salad (Som Tam) is an extremely popular dish in Thailand. It's fresh, and balances all the flavors of sweet, spicy, salty, and sour, to perfection on a single plate.
Underripe Papaya (or Mango) | 1 piece |
Carrot | 1 piece |
Green Beans | 50g |
Cherry tomatoes (quartered) | 5 pieces |
Chillies | 1 or 2 pieces |
Garlic | 1 clove |
Fish sauce (or Soy sauce) | 2 Tbsp |
Coconut Sugar | 2 Tbsp |
Tamarind Paste | 15g (1 sachet) |
Lime | 1 piece |
Unsalted chopped peanuts | 20g |
Slice the vegetables
Peel the papaya (or mango) and the carrot. Then with a sharp knife, cut into julienne strips. You can also attempt to cut into thin strips with your peeler if you feel comfortable using one.
Pound the spices
Pound the garlic and chilli together with a pestle and mortar. Cut the green beans into short lengths, throw into the mortar and pound very lightly, just to soften and bruise them. Place the contents into a mixing bowl.
Prepare the dressing
Add the coconut sugar, lime juice, fish sauce (or soy sauce) and tamarind paste into the mixing bowl.
Make the salad
Then add the papaya (or mango) and cherry tomatoes into the bowl. Mix all the contents together. Sprinkle the salad with chopped peanuts before serving.
